MORNING DANCE (2022)
Morning Dance is a re-imagining of the 1985 film of the same name in memory of its composer Steven M. Miller. The experimental nature of Morning Dance explores the memories of first adolescent love and…consequently rejection. This updated version engages the themes of the original film while expanding its reach into maturity and how those early experiences with love and sex have effected the filmmaker’s subsequent relationships. Dance is used as a catalyst to dramatize everything from first flirtation, to the exuberance of courtship and sex, to the ending of the relationship, loneliness and regret. HISTORY In 1985, Michael Saul and Steven M. Miller collaborated on a short, experimental video called “Morning Dance”. The visuals were based partially on Saul’s first teenage romance and his explorations into aging. The music was based on Miller’s student music piece Terra Incognita and is a rolling, cyclical, hypnotic electronic piece, which inspired Saul to create the images. “Morning Dance” was the first short film that introduced Michael Saul to the film festival circuit and screened at over 20 festivals worldwide. He has since created over 20 short and feature films spanning 40 years. Michael and Steven went on to work together on 3 more video pieces: “Dominus” 1992, “Hover” 1996 and “Don’t Read Now” 2005. Steven also composed the score for Saul’s first feature, “True Love” 2004. Miller died in 2014 from ALS. All of their films went on to screen at festivals and are now available on popular streaming services. |
